A marine park paradise with pristine white beaches and vibrant reefs, Redang balances tropical seclusion with resort-level comfort.
Lush green hills rise from a sea so transparent you can count the fish from the jetty. Marine park-protected since 1994, Redang has kept an untouched quality. Long Beach (Pasir Panjang) shelves into water shifting from pale jade to deep sapphire, with visibility to spot parrotfish from shore.
The Taaras and Redang Beach Resort provide air-conditioned comfort, infinity pools and spa treatments within steps of world-class snorkelling. No ATMs, no nightclubs, pleasantly unreliable signal. Days dissolve into morning dives, afternoon naps and sunset cocktails over the South China Sea.
The coral reefs rank among Peninsular Malaysia's healthiest. Snorkelling off Long Beach puts you among fusiliers, angelfish and butterflyfish within minutes. Dive sites like Big Mount reveal barrel sponges, sea fans and occasional whale sharks. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the beaches May to September, and the island runs a conservation programme couples can visit.
The Taaras Beach and Spa Resort occupies a private northern bay with overwater villas, a hilltop spa and excellent Malay and Western cuisine. Laguna Redang offers mid-range all-inclusive packages covering meals, boat trips and diving. Most packages include return transfers and full board, making budgeting simple.
Redang receives fewer visitors than the Perhentians or Tioman because there are no budget backpacker operations. Beaches never feel crowded, snorkelling sites are often empty, and evenings mean stargazing or watching baby turtles reach the sea during nesting season.
March to October, with April to September offering calmest seas and best visibility, often exceeding 20 metres. Temperatures of 27 to 32 degrees year-round. Turtle nesting peaks May to September. The island closes November to February when the monsoon suspends operations.
Speedboats depart Merang Jetty in Terengganu for the 90-minute crossing, with most resorts arranging transfers. Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) is 45 minutes from Merang, with daily KL flights taking 55 minutes. Berjaya Air runs seasonal flights from Subang to Redang's airstrip.
