George Town on the island of Penang is Malaysia's cultural crown jewel — a UNESCO World Heritage city where ornate Chinese clan houses, Indian temples, British colonial buildings and Malay mosques stand side by side in a compact, walkable grid. The street food here is legendary, with hawker stalls and kopitiam coffee shops serving some of the finest dishes in Southeast Asia.

On the west coast, Malacca wears its 500 years of colonial history along a single atmospheric river — Portuguese forts, Dutch churches and Chinese shophouses line Jonker Street, which comes alive at weekends with a bustling night market. The capital, Kuala Lumpur, is a city of contrasts — the Petronas Towers and glittering KLCC mall sit alongside colonial-era Merdeka Square, the aromatic chaos of Chinatown and the colourful Hindu shrines of Little India. It's an excellent place to begin or end a honeymoon, with world-class hotels and a rooftop bar scene that rivals Bangkok. North of KL, the quietly charming city of Ipoh has emerged as a foodie destination in its own right, with a beautifully crumbling old town, natural hot springs and a cave temple complex set into dramatic limestone cliffs.
