About Rainforest & Nature Destinations

Rainforest & Nature

Malaysia is home to some of the oldest rainforests on earth — over 130 million years old, predating the Amazon — and for honeymoon couples the country's natural landscapes offer experiences that are genuinely hard to find anywhere else. From the summit of Southeast Asia's highest peak to orangutan encounters in the Borneo jungle, this is a side of Malaysia that rewards couples willing to venture beyond the beaches.

Malaysian Borneo is the headline act. Mount Kinabalu in Sabah stands at 4,095 metres and is one of the most accessible major peaks in the world — a two-day guided climb that rewards you with a sunrise above the clouds. The surrounding Kinabalu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, rich in orchids, pitcher plants and birdlife found nowhere else on earth.

On the peninsula, Taman Negara is one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests, with canopy walkways suspended 40 metres above the forest floor, night jungle walks, river cruises and excellent birdwatching. The park is surprisingly easy to reach from Kuala Lumpur, making it a manageable adventure even on a shorter honeymoon. At a gentler pace, the Cameron Highlands offer rolling tea plantations, cool mountain air and a colonial atmosphere that feels like a step back in time — strawberry farms, Tudor-style hotels and afternoon tea with views over the valleys.

For the most immersive wildlife experience, Danum Valley in Sabah is one of the last truly pristine lowland rainforests in Southeast Asia. Access is limited to a single research station and lodge, keeping visitor numbers tiny. Orangutans, pygmy elephants, clouded leopards and the bizarre proboscis monkey all live here, and guided dawn walks through the forest canopy are among the most extraordinary wildlife encounters in the region.
