Immerse yourselves in pristine primary rainforest where pygmy elephants, orangutans and clouded leopards roam — Danum Valley is Borneo's most exclusive wilderness honeymoon.
One of the last places on Earth where you can sleep in a luxury lodge surrounded by 130 million years of unlogged primary rainforest. This 438-square-kilometre conservation area has never been settled or farmed. Dipterocarps reach 70 metres, the canopy keeps the floor in perpetual twilight, and wildlife density is almost unmatched in Southeast Asia.
The Borneo Rainforest Lodge, the valley's only tourist accommodation, sits on the Danum River with 31 stilted chalets. Guided walks begin at dawn and dusk. Night drives reveal sambar deer, civets and, if fortune favours you, a clouded leopard. This is a place that envelops you.
The valley lies 83 kilometres west of Lahad Datu, accessible only by a single logging road taking 2.5 hours. Over 340 bird species have been recorded, including all eight of Borneo's hornbills. Mammals include orangutans, pygmy elephants, sun bears, gibbons, tarsiers and the elusive clouded leopard.
Morning walks often yield orangutan sightings. Guides know resident individuals by name. The canopy walkway, 26 metres up between giant mengaris trees, puts you at eye level with flying squirrels and langurs. The Coffin Cliffs trail leads to ancient Kadazandusun burial sites with carved wooden coffins in rock overhangs.
With only 31 rooms and no other accommodation for 80 kilometres, you share the forest with perhaps 50 guests. Afternoons are spent swimming in the tannin-dark Danum River pool or watching hornbills from your veranda. After dark, the forest symphony takes over, a chorus of frogs, insects and nocturnal birds.
March to October is driest, with the best wildlife viewing April to August when fruiting trees attract orangutans and hornbills. Temperatures hold at 24 to 32 degrees year-round. November to February brings heavier rain and muddier trails, though the lodge stays open.
Fly to Lahad Datu Airport (1 hour from Kota Kinabalu, 2.5 hours from KL). The lodge arranges a 2.5-hour 4WD transfer along the logging road, itself a wildlife experience where pygmy elephants and orangutans are regularly spotted.
