Jungle-fringed islands with crystal-clear waters, sea turtles and vibrant coral, delivering barefoot romance on Malaysia's east coast.
Two jungle-ringed islands sit eleven nautical miles off the Terengganu coast, their beaches so white they glow against the aquamarine water. Sea turtles cruise the shallows with casual grace, surfacing beside snorkellers. For couples craving an unplugged honeymoon, nowhere in Malaysia delivers quite like the Perhentians.
Days unfold between snorkelling at Shark Point, lazy swims off Long Beach and jungle hikes connecting eastern and western bays. By evening, bioluminescence sparks in the shallows while you share barbecued fish under a sky thick with stars. No high-rises, no traffic, just simplicity.
Marine park protection has kept these reefs pristine for decades. Visibility regularly exceeds twenty metres, and the cast includes green and hawksbill turtles, blacktip reef sharks and clouds of tropical fish over staghorn coral. Snorkel from Coral Bay and find yourself eye-to-eye with a turtle within minutes.
Perhentian Besar is the quieter, more romantic island. Boutique resorts like Bubu Long Beach offer air-conditioned chalets steps from the sand. Try Mama's Place for Malay curries or Ewan's Cafe for grilled seafood. For more energy, Perhentian Kecil's Long Beach has beach bars and fire shows.
A private snorkelling trip by longtail costs a fraction of Maldives prices, yet the marine life matches. The jungle trail between Long Beach and Coral Bay takes forty minutes through forest alive with monitor lizards and hornbills. At night, zero light pollution turns the sky into a planetarium.
Accessible March to October. Peak conditions run May to August with calm seas, 20 to 30 metres visibility and temperatures of 27 to 32 degrees. Islands close November to February when the monsoon suspends boats. March and October are quieter shoulder months.
Speedboats depart Kuala Besut jetty in Terengganu for the 45-minute crossing (around RM70 return). The nearest airport is Sultan Mahmud Airport in Kuala Terengganu (TGG), one hour from Kuala Besut, with daily KL flights taking 55 minutes. Overnight buses connect KL and Kuala Besut in about 7 hours.
