Semporna is a small fishing port in southeastern Sabah, gateway to some of the richest marine biodiversity on the planet. Stilted water villages of the Bajau Laut sea nomads stretch from the shore. Offshore, Sipadan is consistently ranked among the world's top five dive sites.

Sipadan's vertical walls drop 600 metres, teeming with barracuda tornados, green turtles and white-tip reef sharks. Mabul Island has excellent muck diving and comfortable resorts. Kapalai, built entirely on stilts over a shallow sandbar, is one of Southeast Asia's most photogenic honeymoon settings.

Why Honeymoon in Semporna?

Sipadan is Malaysia's only oceanic island, rising 600 metres from the Celebes Sea floor. Jacques Cousteau declared it one of the world's great dive sites. Daily access is limited to 176 permits, keeping reefs pristine. Barracuda Point is legendary, where hundreds of chevron barracuda form a spiralling tornado on a sheer wall dive.

Mabul Island, 25 minutes from Semporna, is the main base. Resorts like SMART and Mabul Water Bungalows offer overwater accommodation with house reefs teeming with frogfish, blue-ringed octopus and flamboyant cuttlefish. Kapalai sits on a sandbar between Mabul and Sipadan, with wooden chalets over water so clear you watch fish from bed.

The Bajau Laut sea nomads have lived on boats and in stilted water villages for centuries. Children swim before they walk. The Sunday tamu market in Semporna town brings fishermen, farmers and traders from across the region, a vibrant return to dry land after days of diving.
